A trussed roof uses connected timber members that work together to support the roof. These internal trusses cannot simply be removed to make room for a conversion without an appropriately designed structural solution.
Nuloft specialises in coordinating the structural and practical requirements of loft conversions. We consider the existing trusses, new floor structure, available headroom, staircase position and intended room layout together when developing the project.
A trussed roof is formed from a series of connected timber frames. The internal members help distribute loads through the roof but often occupy the area that would otherwise be used as living space.
Converting the loft generally requires selected members to be altered once suitable replacement support has been designed. A new floor structure capable of supporting the converted rooms will also normally be required. Every trussed roof must therefore be assessed individually before a conversion can be planned.
We discuss your property, the additional space you need and how you would like the completed loft to function.
Step 2: Assessing the Trussed Roof
We assess the roof structure, dimensions, supporting walls, available headroom and possible staircase positions.
Step 3: Developing the Structural Solution
The proposed room layout is developed alongside the structural alterations and replacement support required for the individual roof.
Step 4: Coordinating Project Requirements
Where required, we coordinate with structural engineers, architects, Building Control, party wall surveyors and other relevant professionals. Any applicable planning requirements are also established.
Step 5: Preparing the Project
Once the necessary design work and permissions are in place, we organise the site team, specialist trades, materials and construction programme.
Step 6: Managing Construction
We coordinate the structural alterations and wider conversion work while providing a clear point of contact and regular communication throughout the build.
Step 7: Completion and Warranty
We undertake our quality checks and coordinate the relevant final inspections. The completed conversion is supported by Nuloft’s 10-year independent warranty, with the applicable coverage confirmed in the project documentation.
Why Nuloft
Nuloft combines specialist loft conversion knowledge with Chartered project management, providing one experienced team to coordinate the structural and practical requirements of your conversion.
Specialist Structural Coordination
We understand how alterations to a trussed roof must work with the new floor, staircase, headroom and intended layout. We coordinate the relevant structural requirements as part of the complete loft conversion rather than treating them as a separate consideration.
Chartered Project Management
As London’s only Chartered loft conversion specialist and part of Abbey Construction Group, we bring professional oversight, quality control and clear communication to each project. Our service begins with a free consultation and concludes with the applicable 10-year independent warranty.
The precise scope of a trussed roof loft conversion depends on the property, structural design and agreed project specification.
Structural Roof and Floor Work
The project may include alterations to the existing trusses, installation of replacement supporting elements and construction of a new floor suitable for the proposed rooms.
Staircase, Windows and Internal Layout
We can coordinate the staircase, insulation, internal walls, doors and carpentry, together with roof windows or a dormer where included in the agreed design.
Services and Completion
Electrical, plumbing, heating, plastering and agreed internal finishes may also form part of the conversion. Your proposal will confirm the exact scope, along with inspection coordination and applicable completion documentation.
The most appropriate configuration will depend on the roof dimensions, required headroom, room layout and external planning considerations.
Trussed Roof Conversions with Roof Windows
Where sufficient headroom is already available, roof windows can introduce natural light and ventilation while the structural alterations create a more open internal space.
Trussed Roof Conversions with Dormers
On a suitable property, a dormer can provide additional headroom and make more of the loft floor usable. Its structure, dimensions and external appearance must be considered alongside the alterations to the existing trusses.

This was my first every building project so a very daunting experience however Guy and his team were amazing. They were not only supportive and reassuring, but they were flexible with the change and development of my loft conversion project as it evolved. I had several companies quote for the job, but it was Guy’s honest and realistic approach to the plan of work and budget that made my decision to use them which paid off because my daughter now has her dream room.
The team that completed the physical build were nothing short of amazing lead by the most wonderful man Kosta who took such pride in the work and was ridiculously accommodating.
Having a bunch of strangers in your home for 6x weeks could have been very disruptive especially with young kids at home however they were respectful, friendly and other than a few particularly dusty days it was very non-intrusive. The work was finished to a high standard and completed in record time. I was shocked at how quick and efficient the whole build was.
It has completely changed the dynamics of our home and we could not be more grateful to Guy, Kosta and the team for making this happen.

5 stars
Nuloft renovated our house about three years ago, including a rear extension and loft conversion, and we’re still really happy with the result.
They were easy to work with, good at keeping in touch, and stuck to the budget and timelines, which made a big project feel much more manageable.
Like with any renovation, there were a few hiccups along the way, but they were always quick to sort things out and put things right. Even now, three years later, they’re still really helpful whenever we need advice or have a question about the house.
We love our home and would definitely recommend them to anyone thinking about doing a similar project

Recently had a loft conversion done by Nuloft and was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly it went. Having heard some horror stories about conversions from other companies, I was a little worried about the whole process. However the team were excellent, finished bang on schedule (which was nice) and the results were exactly as planned and costed. Not even a penny over budget. It's nice to come across some old fashioned customer care when most companies just want to grab the money and run.

We worked with Steve and Tani from Nuloft on the full renovation of our Victorian house. From our initial meeting up to project completion they were a dream to work with - professional, courteous, proactive, punctual and with excellent communication and attention to detail throughout. The project was finished on time and within budget and we couldn't be happier with the result. Highly recommend.

Nuloft completed a beautiful loft conversion on our property in Sidcup. They were really personable and courteous and it was far less stressful than we anticipated.

No. The individual members form part of a connected structural system and should not be removed without an appropriately designed replacement. The required solution will depend on the roof, supporting structure and proposed layout.
Not necessarily. Suitability depends on factors including the roof dimensions, available head height, structural arrangement and possible staircase position. An assessment is required before an appropriate recommendation can be made.
Not always. Internal structural alterations may not require planning permission, but roof windows, dormers and other external changes must meet the applicable permitted development conditions. Planning permission will be required where those conditions or rights do not apply.
A loft converted into habitable space will generally require Building Regulations approval. Relevant requirements can cover structural stability, the new floor, fire safety, staircase design, insulation, ventilation and electrical work.
Potentially, yes. Roof windows may provide light and ventilation, while a dormer can create additional headroom. The appropriate option depends on the roof structure, available space, intended layout and relevant planning requirements.
